Erosion, Weathering, and Dissolving

Dear Parents and Students,

We are learning about events that change over long periods of time such as dissolving, weathering, and erosion. These events are interesting because although they take a very long time to occur, we can observe these events everyday.

The Erosion site shows in great detail the effects of erosion and how it occurs. At this geography site you can view pictures of a sea stack that has been eroded over time.

The weathering site discusses the different types of weathering such as mechanical, chemical, and biological. This site has great pictures of weathered objects and explains how weathering occurs.

We are also learning about dissolving. Dissolving easily observed by using everyday materials and comparing the effects to events that have happened over time. At this dissolving site you can see how materials are dissolved.

Changes In State

Dear Parents and Students,

We are now learning about changes in states of matter by adding or reducing heat energy. This a difficult concept to grasp and these sites will help the students understand in a fun way.

The adding heat website allows the students to control the amount of temperature they add and then change the state of the material themselves. The student also has the option to sort different objects into categories of solids, liquids, and gases.

The melting site allows students to choose different objects and melt them using heat and then cool them to make them solid again. This activity allows student to observe the melting points of different objects and also see at what temperature they cool off and become solid.

At the changing states of matter site the students can read in more detail about solids , liquids, and gases and observe diagrams of matter being changed. This site discusses freezing and boiling points and the energy of atoms.

Patterns Of Change

Dear Parents and Students,

We are now learning about patterns of change in our science class. We will be identifying patterns of change in weather, metamorphosis, and objects in the sky such as the moon, sun, and stars.

We are learning about changes in metamorphosis. At this butterfly site you can print off a coloring page that shows the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. There are also puzzles that the student can do for fun. There is a caterpillar and a butterfly puzzle. This site will help students learn more about metamorphosis and have fun while doing it.

At the climate change site the students can watch a video that shows the water cycle and how it affects changes in our weather. This site also teaches about water storage, water movement, the wet cycle and the dry cycle. This is an easy to use site and will help the students understand our weather in a fun way.

We will also be looking at patterns in the sky. The earth in orbit site will help the student understand the patterns of our Earth's orbit and that of the moon. The students can play around with the time and where our Earth will be in orbit at that time. How much fun!!

Graphs and Tables

Dear Students and Parents,

We are learning how to construct simple graphs and tables. This is a scientific process from the TEKS. We will be learning how to create circle graphs and bar graphs and how they represent information.

Here are some internet sites that will help the students understand how graphs work.

At the Bar graph site the student can enter their own data and it will create their own bar graph. At the Circle graph site the students can do the same thing but the information is represented by a circle graph. With this final site, the students can choose the graph they want to use and design it themselves. It is called the create a graph website.

These sites will help the students and parents learn how graphs work and how to create them using different information.
